Narrator: Avril Lavigne was born on September 27, 1984. She is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She was born in Belleville, Ontario. She grew up in Napanee singing country music in a church and choir and she taught herself how to play the guitar. She was discovered by her first professional manager while singing covers in a Chapters book store in Kingston, Ontario.
Avril Lavigne: By the time I was six-teen, I was signed by Arista Records, and I subsequently moved to New York City to work on my first album. Early attempts to co-write songs for me failed to meet my approval, and I eventually moved to Los Angeles, California and co-wrote my album with Cliff Magness and a songwriting team “The Matrix.”
Narrator: How was your life as a little girl?
Avril Lavigne: My first album, “Let Go”, was released by Arista on June 4, 2002. I was named “Best New Artist” at the 2002 MTV Awards. By December 2004, my first album “Let Go” had sold fifteen million albums and reached the number one spot in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the number 2 spot in the United States.
Narrator: Avril Lavigne was the youngest Canadian to ever sell a million copies in Canada. Her album “Let Go” spawned four hit singles in various parts of the world. She had many competitors but always was the best.
Cliff Magness: I think Avril has a lot of talent for a very young Canadian singer. She has co-wrote an album with me and a songwriting team. She has sold over a million hits and she still is singing today.
Narrator: Avril Lavigne is still singing today and will continue. Her life as a singer is alive today.
